What you need to apply for your Tax registration number
Whether you’re setting up a business, opening a bank account, or just getting your paperwork in order, your Taxpayer Registration Number (TRN) is a must-have in Jamaica. Your TRN is a unique number issued by Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ). It’s used for all official transactions — from banking and taxes to property and employment.
For individuals applying in person, you’ll need:
- Valid photo ID (passport, driver’s license, or national ID),
- Completed TRN application form (available at TAJ or online),
- Birth certificate (if no photo ID is available), and if applying on behalf of a minor, the parent/guardian’s ID and child’s birth certificate.
- For non-residents or those applying from abroad, you’ll need notarized copies of your ID and application form, completed TRN application form, and you’ll send documents to TAJ via mail or through a representative.
The cost is free, and processing usually takes 5–10 business days. You’ll receive a physical TRN card or a confirmation letter.
You can apply in Jamaica at any Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) office, OR online by downloading this form from TAJ’s website, or abroad* via mail or through a Jamaican embassy/consulate.
Pro tips: make photocopies of everything before submitting, double-check that your name matches across all documents, and keep your TRN safe — you’ll need it often. Your TRN is your gateway to doing business, getting paid, and being recognized by Jamaican institutions. It’s one of the first steps to becoming financially and legally active on the island.
*TRN Cards for applicants who submitted their forms via mail from overseas will then be mailed to applicant’s address as stated on application. If the Identification or supporting documents are not in English, an official translated version is also required. The signature on the application form must match that on the Identification presented
