 Where to Start

Every big dream begins with one small, slightly confused, terrifying, step

Contents
  • 🧭 Step One: Get Clear on the “Why”
  • 🗂️ Step Three: Embrace the Chaos

Starting is hard. Whether you’re dreaming of buying land in Jamaica,  building a house in Jamaica, launching a blog, starting a business, or finally learning how to make proper rice and peas, the first step always feels like the scariest.

You stare at the blank page, the empty plot of land, the untouched passport application, and think: Where do I even begin?

Here’s the truth: you begin exactly where you are. With your messy thoughts, your half-baked plans, and your wild hope that maybe — just maybe — this thing could work.

🧭 Step One: Get Clear on the “Why”

Before you dive into logistics, ask yourself: Why am I doing this?

Is it freedom? Adventure? A deep longing for sunshine and mangoes? Your “why” is your compass. It’ll guide you when things get confusing (and trust me, they will).

Be sure to write down your why and reference it often. If you need to iterate, that’s okay! Start with a brain dump-anything that comes to mind and refine it later.

🧱 Step Two: Break It Down

Big dreams are like good oxtail— best results after it’s been simmering for some time.

Want to move to Jamaica? Start by researching parishes.

Want to build a house? Look for inspiration for your dream layout.

Want to start a blog? Write one paragraph. Just one.

Tiny steps lead to big moves.

🗂️ Step Three: Embrace the Chaos

Starting something new is messy. You’ll lose documents, forget passwords, and maybe cry over cement prices. That’s normal. The chaos means you’re in motion. Celebrate it.

🫱🏽‍🫲🏾 Step Four: Ask for Help

You don’t have to do it alone. Talk to locals, join online groups, ask Auntie Bev, who knows a guy who knows a guy. Community is your secret weapon.

🌺 Final Thoughts

Starting isn’t about having it all figured out. It’s about showing up — imperfect, unsure, but ready. Ready to learn, to grow, and to laugh when you face a set back. Sometimes, ‘no’ is redirection and you have to be patient.

So if you’re wondering where to start, here’s your answer:

Start here. Follow along on my journey. I’ll share my learnings along the way and happily answer any questions.
